Vertava Health To Open New Ohio Facility
Sherrodsville, OH – (April 27, 2017)–Vertava Health, a nationwide leader in alcohol and drug abuse treatment, announces the purchase and renovation of what was formerly Atwood Lake Resort and will now become The Bluffs. The 79.4-acre property operated as a hotel/conference center and golf course from 1965 to May of 2016. In its transition, the property will become a clinical environment featuring all levels of innovative addiction treatment therapy.
Renovations are expected to begin on the property by the end of April and will continue until The Bluffs opening. Officials at Vertava Health plan to be open and fully operational by September 2017.
“With the heroin epidemic that’s taking place right now in the state, this is a perfect location to optimize treatment capability by offering alternative treatments, and bring more jobs to the area, boosting the economy of the region,” says Vertava Health CEO Brent Clements. “Hundreds of Ohio residents succumbing to opioid addiction each month. New options for treatment could not come at a more important time.”
The new campus will hold up to 150 clients engaged in therapeutic models designed to heal the mind, body and spirit.
“We believe in implementing a higher level of balance in our clients,” says Clements. “Social, spiritual, and economical. We want them to find success in every aspect of their daily lives. Keeping our clients engaged is the most effective tool we can give them in preventing relapse.”
The Bluffs campus will specialize in implementing a high level of balance in clients: From social and spiritual, to economic factors. Successful outcomes are based on creating a long-term, sustainable recovery.
The central portion of the site boasts a 110,000 square foot two-story lodge building, an approximately 3,750 square foot, two-story chalet building, and associated asphalt paved parking lots/driveways and concrete walkways. The interior of the lodge building consists of a reception area, common areas, offices, luxury accommodations perfect for inpatient detox and treatment, a cafeteria, kitchen, indoor swimming pool, fitness room, group therapy rooms, restrooms, housekeeping and laundry areas and maintenance and storage areas. The interior of the chalet building consists of a lounge area, kitchen, restroom and storage areas.
An outdoor swimming pool, sand volleyball court and shuffleboard courts are situated to the northeast of the lodge building. A portion of Lodge Road SW traverses east to west across the north portion of the site, and a 9-hole par 3 golf course is located in the north and east portions of the site, south of Lodge Road Sw.
Additionally, a maintenance building, storage building and several lean-to buildings are situated in the southeast portion of the site and will continue to be utilized for landscape equipment maintenance and dry storage. The remainder of the site consists of grass-covered and wooded land.

Maintaining The Bluffs’ Historical Relevance
Based on a review of historical information, two small structures, presumably a residential dwelling and associated outbuilding, were located in the north portion of the site (south of Lodge Road SW) from the early 1900s to at least 1958. During that time, the remainder of the site was comprised of wooded and grass-covered land.
Sometime between 1958 and the mid-1960s, the dwelling and outbuilding were demolished. In 1965, the existing lodge building, chalet building, and associated parking lots/driveways were constructed in the central portion of the site and a golf course was established in the north portion of the site, south of Lodge Road SW.
In 1982, the existing maintenance building, lean-to-buildings, storage building, and an associated driveway were constructed in the southeast portion of the site. Since that time, the features located on the site have remained relatively unchanged.
The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District sold the site to the Carroll County Board of Commissioners in 2012, which operated the lodge and maintained the property from 2012 to May 2016. Since May 2016, the lodge and associated facilities have not been operational.
The property has been the site of many life-changing events throughout its history such as weddings, anniversary celebrations and other milestones. Thankfully, this will continue as hundreds arrive at the site during the darkest time of their life and undergo their transition into living in the hope and healing found in recovery.
Contributing to Economic Development
The campus will bring over 200 jobs to the area, including a full medical staff. Clements plans to hire local contractors to conduct the renovations. Two staff members, who have maintained the buildings during the years in which it has been vacant, both Sherrodsville residents, will be retained to continue their work at the campus.
