Healing from a mental or substance use condition is not something that many people can do on their own. At Vertava Health, one of the techniques we use to aid patients in this process is psychotherapy.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, involves talking with a psychotherapist or behavior health provider as a means of self-exploration often with the goal of changing behavior and improving overall well-being. Psychotherapy treatment is used for an array of behavioral health conditions including various mental illnesses as well as substance use disorders.

There are also several different types of psychotherapy and some psychotherapy methods may be more effective than others depending on the condition being treated as well as the individual. At Vertava Health, we have team members trained in several of these methods to give our patients their greatest chance of healing.

Psychotherapy for Mental Health Disorders

Psychotherapy is a common practice used in mental health treatment for various conditions. At Vertava Health, we utilize mental health psychotherapy to help patients understand their condition as well as how to better manage their symptoms.

Working with a licensed professional in individual and sometimes even group settings, patients will analyze their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in relation to their mental health condition as well as the driving factors behind them. Depending on the patient’s situation, our psychotherapists may also focus on past trauma and its influence on them now. Through psychotherapy treatment, our patients will learn to recognize harmful thought patterns and develop healthier coping skills in response that can help them drastically decrease the severity and frequency of their symptoms.

Depending on the specific needs of the patients, talk therapy treatment alone may not be sufficient. Because medications may be used in tandem with psychotherapy for the most effective treatment, we offer medication management for patients at some of our locations or will refer them out to an appropriate professional for an assessment.

Psychotherapy for Substance Use Disorders

We also utilize psychotherapy for drug addiction and alcoholism at all of our addiction treatment centers.  Because mental health and substance use are often intertwined, lasting recovery from substance use requires addressing any comorbid mental health concerns.

Psychotherapy treatment offers an effective means of looking at addiction as a whole and breaking down the toxic relationship between mental health and substance use. Working one-on-one with a licensed therapist as well as in groups, patients will analyze the underlying causes of their addiction and how their substance use started. They will also examine the influence of their past on their current behavior and learn how to change their thinking to make lasting changes to their behavior in recovery.

Psychotherapy Treatment Services

At Vertava Health, we use psychotherapy throughout our continuum of care to treat both mental health and substance use conditions. Psychotherapy sessions take place in group and individual settings and will also take different forms depending on the needs of the patient. The recommended amount of psychotherapy per week will also depend on the specific treatment program.

Some of the psychotherapy techniques we utilize include:

Because some of these methods of psychotherapy may be more effective than others for certain patients, we believe in utilizing several different techniques and taking a comprehensive approach to treatment. In some cases, medications may also be combined with talk therapy treatment to increase the chances of our patients finding long-term success. Contact us today to learn more.
