Horses Will Visit Campus Regularly in Anticipation of Equine Therapy Program

DALLAS, Texas (April 1, 2016) – Animals are a wonderful therapeutic experience, and that’s precisely why we’ve committed to bringing horses to the Treehouse campus in Scurry, Texas each month for clients to ride, groom or just commune with. While the Treehouse vision is an official equine therapy program in the future, recreational animal therapy is providing a new supplement to the already diverse offering of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Expressive and Adventure Therapies.

“The clients have responded positively to the opportunity to experience the horses on the sprawling acreage that the campus offers,” says Chief Clinical Officer Toril Newman. “Observing clients interacting with the animals gives us great insight into their patterns. For example, if you take someone to the field and say ‘pick a horse’, some will freeze, some will ask questions, and some will run and find the tallest horse they can find. This helps us to record their personality type and how it applies to their addiction and identify possible mental processing irregularities.”

April 2016 marks the 29th Annual Alcohol Awareness Month, and the Treehouse is hoping this new type of therapy will encourage those battling the disease to face their trauma and learn to trust again.

“Horses have the ability to connect with those recovering from trauma in a very unique way,” says Treehouse CEO Vinnie Strumolo. “There is a bond that’s formed between the client and the animal. The horse has to trust its rider, and the rider has to trust the horse.”

The therapy has been very effective for our clients with unresolved trauma. Trauma that can easily lead to depression, anxiety and chemical dependency.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 88,000 people die every year from alcohol-related causes in the United States. There are 23 million Americans in recovery, and those battling this illness are not alone. Treehouse treatment specialists will be working extra hours during the month of April, providing assessments and treatment placement around the clock.

We want your viewers, listeners and readers to know that help is a phone call away. It is our hope that no other person has to die because they don’t see a way out.

It is never too late to start your new life. That’s why we’re also encouraging those in recovery from alcoholism to post their pic on social media using the hashtag #NotWhoIUsed2B to let people know how far they’ve come.

Custom PSAs for Alcohol Awareness Month for your station or publication are available upon request. Any media outlets who wish to join in this fight with us by airing or posting will be listed as a partner on the Vertava Health website (The Treehouse’s parent company), and they will be acknowledged and thanked on social media by both organizations. Thank you for your involvement in spreading hope and healing into the lives of the people of Texas.
